A reason for a murder in a book?

I am writing a book about this kid whose best friend was murdered. The kid was with his best friend when he was murdered, and he knows who the murderer is. The kid knows the murderer from a previous event in his life. I just cannot come up with the event or the reason the murderer murdered. Can anyone help?
